Recounts of a Man who saw Unbelievable Things.
Dejavu It was dark. I was swimming underwater. The current was getting stronger and it was pushing me back so I figured that I was approaching an underwater cave. There was a light at end of this bleak looking cave. As I swam forward, I saw something that looks like white shells. I squinted my eyes to see clearer and I wished I did not. Instead of shells, I saw human remains instead. I wanted to swim out of that dangerous looking cave but the current was now pushing me towards the light. As I braced myself for a giant octopus or something, I did not expect to see that ugly looking creature. I screamed but it was muffled by the water. Before I knew it, I was drowning and soon to be eaten by that ugly monster.
I opened my eyes. The sun rays were shining down on me and my alarm clock was ringing. It was just a dream. I sighed heavily and thank god that it was all just a bad dream. A bad dream that felt too real and has repeated for this last few days. Lazily getting out of bed, I walked to my bathroom. I splashed some cold water on my face which gave me a shiver. Brushed my teeth, combed my hair then going into the kitchen to get some breakfast. While happily eating my waffles, I realized it was already 10 in the morning.
"Oh hot soup! I'm late for work again! Mister Armstrong is going to kill me!" I shouted at the top of my lungs.
I ran for the door forgetting to wear my pants. I met Sarah when I went out the door. She looked like an angel again today with the sun shining in the background. Her face was red and she was giggling. I wondered why and on a whim, I looked down at my pant less bottom. I absconded back into my apartment and looked for my pants. I was thinking to myself on how much of a dunce I was. How could I have embarrassed myself in front of the angel I have a huge crush on. She must think I am such a fool. I dispersed the thought of it and ran out of the house again making sure I had my pants on. I flagged down a taxi and made the driver rush offering to pay him 20 dollars more than the fair. Unfortunately, even after wasting 45 dollars on that taxi ride, I was still late for work. This was the fifth time this week. I dragged my feet to Mister Armstrong's office and timidly knocked the door. I put on my sad and anxious face getting ready to apologize. I took a deep breathe and opened the door. Apparently, lady luck on my side, my boss was home sick today and I was saved the trouble of explaining why I was late again and getting fired in the process.
As I skipped to my desk, Wendy was eating a sandwich which was filled with many disgusting looking fillings. I cringed in fear and went on my way. You would too. It was filled with a full tuna fish, not the ones from the can, mayonnaise, cheese, some green goo and I think the bread had mold on it. I saw Harry who was, again, kicking angrily at the photocopy machine. Looks like 21st century technology did not like him. Sometimes, people would call him Harry Dresden because of his unluckiness with technology. Then came the snobby woman named Tina. She was talking on the phone loudly. Probably with her beloved convict boyfriend. How I loathe this job but, sadly, it was the only job I could find. I finally reached my cubicle looking at a photo of Sarah. She looked so wonderful. If you are wondering how I got her photograph, I will tell you it was a secret. (No, I am not a stalker. I'm just deeply in love with her.)
The day went by normally and I dragged myself to the pub. Tyler the bartender greeted me and gave me my usual dose of Chivas. In the wee hours of the morning, I finally got drunk. I payed for my drinks and went home, or so i thought. By some mysterious force, I was attracted to the beach. I took off my shoes and socks then off came my shirt and jacket. Before I knew it, I was only in my boxers. The sea looked tempting and I wanted to plunge into the deep blue sea. So I did.
It was dark. As I braced myself for a giant octopus, I realized I was having a dejavu moment. It did not quite hit me to why it all looked so familiar. Finally, I remembered the dream I had been having for the past few days. Now, instead of bracing myself for a giant octopus, I covered my eyes to avoid seeing a ugly creature.
When I opened my eyes, light was shining down on me. I gave a sigh of relief that, again, it was all just a nasty dream. Only, this time, I felt cold. My bed felt hard as a rock and somehow, my white bed sheets have turn green. It felt slimy today and I was naked with only my boxers on. Looking closer, I was actually lying on a big piece of seaweed. I looked up and I saw the most beautiful girl. She was much more beautiful than Sarah. (Yes, I know its hard to believe, I was shocked myself.) I could not stop myself from staring at her. The girl had long brown hair, baby blue eyes and her smile blinded me more than the sun. I shielded my eyes and tried to sit up.
"No, you shouldn't. You must rest. You must have been tired from swimming all the way here from the mainland." said the girl with a voice that was so sweet and so calm.
I turned red from the sound of her voice and I could feel the blood going up to my brain. I felt so warm until a cold hand touched me on the forehead.
"Are you feeling all right? You're burning up." said the girl.
"I- I- I'm alright! I-It's nothing really." I stuttered in reply.
I heard her giggle and it was the most cutest thing I have ever heard. I blushed even more and continued staring at her beauty. My gaze then went down to her chest. (No, I am not a pervert but her chest were covered by something that looked like big scallop shells.) When I looked down further, I could see scales and then fins. My eyes widened and I backed away from her in shocked.
"P-Please don't eat me! I-I have a family!" I pleaded.
Quizzically she asked, "Why would I want to eat you?"
"I-I heard that mermaids eat men" I replied with fear and panic in my voice.
"Silly you! Mermaids don't eat people! We eat fishies! They're so yummy you know! Try it!" she replied while pushing some sort of white meat at my face.
I hesitantly accepted the meat and popped it into my mouth. I felt like I was in heaven. I had never tasted something as delicious as this. It was soft as a cloud and the taste was neither sweet nor was it bitter. It was something in between. There were no bones in them so I did not have to worry about choking. I gobbled down the rest of the food and she just watched me with a smile on her face.
"Is it delicious?" she asked me, giggling.
I nodded vigorously and continued eating the white meat. Eating too quickly, I started to choke. I wanted to gulp something down and I realized that I was already drinking something. Confused I looked at my surrounding and saw fishes of all kinds swimming around. I widened my eye with both shock and amusement. I turned to the beautiful mermaid and as if reading my mind she replied with disbelief on my face.
"I found you lying on the seabed when I was looking for some food. You were drowning so I made you eat one of my scales."
"YOUR SCALES?! ASDFGHJKL!"
"Yes, my scales. It allows humans to live like mer people... without the tails."
I was baffled. (I mean who wouldn't right?) If you were underwater, breathing like a fish, eating some meat that you cannot find in any ordinary supermarket and most amazing yet, talking to a mermaid! Not the ones you see in pictures or the Disney movies. A. Real. Live. Mermaid. Thinking about how silly everything was, I chuckled and it turned into a thunderous laugh. Suddenly, everything started to tremble. I thought it was because of my laughter but looking at the mermaid's frightened face, I thought otherwise. I wanted to ask her what was wrong but she swiftly hushed me and mouthed for me to stay still. She swam out of her circular looking door. I anxiously waited for an "okay" sign but instead I head a piercing scream. It was the mermaid! I swam after her and something hit me on the head and I blanked out again. Labels: Chapter 1, Done
